FAQs

Can I have a doula even if I am having a hospital birth?

Absolutely. Doulas are for everyone. We will work respectfully with any medical staff, midwives, OBs, and nurses to give you the best possible care.

Do you perform any physical examinations?

Doulas are support people for you and your partner. We will provide physical support by way of pain management techniques, massage, words of affirmation, etc., but we do not perform any type of medical procedures or examinations, nor do we give medical advice. We are happy to help you create lists and questions for your medical care provider and help you understand their answers.

How will hiring you affect my partner’s role during the birth?

This is a very common question. Hiring a doula will absolutely change the role of your partner during the birth, but it will change it for the better. Many non-birthing partners feel unsure of what their role is in the birth room and often times the birthing partner has trouble communicating what they want in the moment. It is our job as your doula to ensure that the connection between you and your partner comes first, and that you both feel honoured and important in this process.

Do I need to be planning an unmedicated vaginal birth to hire a doula?

No! this is YOUR birth. What matters is that we are working towards the birth that you want to have, whether that be an unmedicated vaginal birth, or a planned c-section. We will support you every step of the way and help you advocate for the birth you want.

Will you communicate my wants and needs to medical staff for me?

As your doula, we cannot speak for you. What we can do is be a presence in the room, an extra set of eyes and ears, and someone to remind you that you have a choice in almost everything. We will ensure you have time to discuss and think about any options presented to you whenever possible and will help you formulate questions for your health care providers so you get the answers you need to make informed decisions.

Will you sleep train my baby during postpartum visits?

Waking during the night is biologically normal for infants and even for toddlers. We do not offer sleep training during visits, however we can offer advise and suggestions on biologically normal sleep and safe sleeping solutions for your family.

I want to gift your services to a loved one. Do you offer gift cards?

Gifting doula services is such a wonderful idea! We do not offer physical gift cards but we am happy to work something out to make this a reality for you and your loved one.
